Rwanda Hopes to Host a Formula 1 Grand Prix
F1 will meet with representatives from the African nation next month
Formula 1's focus on Africa is gaining momentum. Rwanda is in advanced talks to host a grand prix, aiming to bring F1 to the continent for the first time in decades.
The interest in F1 is booming across Africa, with fans like Kenyan influencer Joy Jeptoo and Nigerian F1 news account F1 Naija driving the surge.
The Middle East currently attracts many African fans, but the continent itself remains absent from the F1 calendar.
F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali confirmed exclusively to Motorsport that a meeting with Rwanda in September to discuss a permanent track project is happening.
Rwanda's engagement is part of a broader African interest in F1, with viewing parties and fan communities growing rapidly.
In Kenya, for example, entertainment venues compete to host F1 viewing parties, drawing large crowds. Joy Jeptoo, a social media influencer, hosts these events, attracting fans who spend significantly on food and drinks. The Paddock Experience in Kenya pulls in up to 1,400 fans per event, showing strong demand for F1 content.
Africa's F1 interest is fueled by Netflix's "Drive to Survive," which has brought the sport to a wider audience. Fans now access live races through F1 TV and DStv, making the sport more accessible. Female fans are also on the rise, contributing to the sport's growing popularity.
Despite this, Africa hasn't hosted an F1 race since 1993. Lewis Hamilton and other advocates argue for its return, seeing it as essential for a true world championship.
The Kyalami circuit in South Africa was a potential venue, but political issues stalled the process.
With F1 expanding its calendar and global reach, Africa should be a key target. Rwanda's advanced plans and widespread African support underscore the potential for a successful return to Africa for F1.
