What changed? General Motors' enhanced role transformed this from "an American racing team wanting in" to "a global automotive giant making a strategic play."
Michael Andretti has stepped back from operational roles in favor of Dan Towriss, which may have eased tensions within the paddock.
This plan diverges from the previous Andretti proposal, which was rejected earlier this year. GM plans to build its own power unit by 2028, so initial customer engines (FerrariĀ andĀ HondaĀ areĀ being discussed) will be required to facilitate their entry.
I believe the Ferrari power unit is preferred, and I expect to hear something official in the coming weeks.
During the FP3 race broadcast this weekend, McLaren Racing CEO Zak Brown had this to say:
āI know what Iām hearing on the grapevine. Weāve not been officially told anything, but we partner with General Motors with our INDYCAR team. Iāve seen them here and they seem to have big smiles on their faces. I believe an announcement is probably imminent. Itāll be exciting to have another manufacturer aside from Audi F1 Project joining our sport.ā

Mario Andretti and Greg Maffei clashed at a private reception during the Miami Grand Prix weekend over Andretti Global's bid to enter the sport, according to sources of the incident.
Andretti claims that Maffei told him, "I will do everything in my power to see that Michael [Andretti] never enters Formula 1."
